How to install FreeBSD with MATE
« on: January 28, 2015, 11:42:41 PM »
 WARNING: This may not work, the last time I tried it I got a login error
.
The installer is prety straight forward. You ahve an option to use the entire hard drive or manual partitions. If you don't understand how to partition a hard drive, then stay away from FreeBSD. remember, when prompted to, create a user account, not just a root account. Once installer is done, reboot.

Update the system

Code: [Select]
freebsd-update fetch install

Install Nano text editor

Code: [Select]
pkg install nano

Install Xorg

Code: [Select]
pkg install xorg

Install Mate along with Mate applications

Code: [Select]
pkg install mate-desktop-mate

Install Slim

Code: [Select]
pkg install slim

Edit rc.conf

Code: [Select]
nano /etc/rc.conf

Just below the other text type

Code: [Select]
dbus_enable="YES"
hald_enable="YES"
slim_enable="YES"

Press Ctrl X to save and close

Edit the root .xinitrc

Code: [Select]
nano .xinitrc

Type

Code: [Select]
exec mate-session
Press Ctrl X to save and close

Now edit /home/youruser/.xinitrc

Code: [Select]
nano /home/youruser/.xinitrc
Same steps as the root one.

Now install some basic applications such as Firefox.

Code: [Select]
pkg install firefox

Now reboot. and you will be welcomed by a nice login screen :)

This is just a quick tutorial on how to install Mate DE on FreeBSD. This doesn't include drivers. You still have more configuring to do. I can't say this enough READ THE WIKI!

NOTE: FreeBSD isn't user friendly. If you plan to play high end computer games on it, make sure your hardware is supported. FreeBSD does have issues with AMD hardware.

Basic commands can be found on the bottom of this page: http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=package-management

Anyway hope this helped!

Thanks for sharing this.  The directions look about the same as what I've used in the past, but I've never run MATE before.
I managed to get running with LXDE or Xfce before on my Netbook.

I use i3 personally. Just thought I'd use mate in the tutorial.

And no problem. I plan on making more in the near future

If I use FreeBSD again (I'm going to use it in a VM when I have time), this will be my option. Gnome2 was removed from the repositories and ports. Shame really ;(
