FreeBSD Receives A Million Dollar Donation

Pretty cool to see someone giving back.  It's also ironic that Sony use FreeBSD for the PS3/PS4 yet have donated $0!

The FreeBSD has received their largest ever single donation: $1,000,000 USD.

The FreeBSD Foundation received the million dollar gift from Jan Koum, the CEO and co-founder of the WhatsApp messaging application that was acquired by Facebook earlier this year.

The FreeBSD Foundation is still plotting their investment using this large gift and they're of course very happy for surpassing this year's fundraising goal.

In a Facebook post, Jan Koum cites having used FreeBSD since the late 1990's and perhaps most importantly: "In a way, FreeBSD helped lift me out of poverty – one of the main reasons I got a job at Yahoo! is because they were using FreeBSD, and it was my operating system of choice. Years later, when Brian and I set out to build WhatsApp, we used FreeBSD to keep our servers running. We still do."

That is so cool that someone is actively helping this neat project out. I will try it again when I can actually figure out by documentation how to install it without having to so much techie stuff. I am not really wanting to do the command-line without my GUI's but maybe that is what I need to do inorder to quit being so lazy lol. ;)

Of course Sony isn't chipping in. Instead they're doing everything they can to destroy the free internet. They're always supporting bills like SOPA and are still pushing for tougher regulations on the internet.....To stop pirating. The truth is people will go back to pirating digital media if they censor the internet. Thats good for FReeBSD. Someday I hope to run it on one of my machines.
