Title: FerenOS - now based off Kubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
Post by: swarfendor437 on February 21, 2020, 05:51:34 PM
Hi Guys,
Well Windows 7 was coming to an end on my good lady's machine and I installed FerenOS - the latest release based on Kubuntu and not the FerenOS Classic which used Cinnamon. I was able to transfer her ladyships favourite theme from 7 (Beach sunset themes, including the login sound of Seagulls calling and Tug Boat warning sounds!) Now considering it is an Athlon 3700+ processor, only 2 Gb (max MSI board will take) and an aging 256 Mb AGP fanless EVGA card I was well impressed. I chose the 'familiar layout' (Win10 look LoL!) and they are happy with it. Here is the desktop look on my login:

Now on another family members machine which has an i7 processor and 8 Gb RAM  and had Windows 7 64bit on it I had issues with the Calamares installer, no matter what I tried. I resolved the issue by running Zorin 15 in live mode, using GParted to format the partitions as needed, turned off the machine, put in the FerenOS disc on re-boot, started the Calamares installer and used the partitions created 'as is' for FerenOS:

I've also installed it on an old Dell Latitude D830 with only 2 Gb RAM also:

A 32-bit version is also available but the dev warns that support will end in 2023 or sooner depending on how Canonical are going to play this.

A major issue I had on her ladyship's rig was tearing - this was resolved in the main by using the Compositor Setting under Advanced in System Setting and changing from the default OpenGL 2 setting to 'xrender', removng animations and setting display to smooth as opposed to crisp. There are still issues with the System Settings menu when you scroll it does multiple blurs. One of the reasons I chose FerenOS over others, amongst other things, was Timeshift being present in it.

Fun fact: A Linux desktop environment with Windows 10 UI imitating theme works much faster and more stable than the original Windows 10 UI.

The widgets are still not quite as good as those on offer with Gnome Tweaks but the recent release now allows widgets to be resized (Plasma 5.18) :)

I've always been really impressed with the progress that Feren OS has made. Really hits home for me in terms of aesthetics and stability. Not super into the widgets, but feel like they're a nice touch for those that use them.
