Title: BBcode Signatures: So I made a new signature
Post by: DQSII on March 30, 2018, 11:19:37 PM
So I got Around to making a new signature for my account here after the longest time :p

You can use BBcode in your profile to create a signature. Spatry provides a tutorial below.

Looks good. Remember kids, graphics in signatures is fine as long as they are not overbearing.

Looks great! Reminds me that I need to set up another for my profile. Haven't had one since selling my old ROG laptop.

Are Steam Signatures not allowed anymore? it looks like url bbcode is no longer allowed in signatures.

I get this message when i try to use the url bbcode tag

Quote
The following errors occurred when trying to save your profile:
The following BBC is not allowed within your signature: abbr, acronym, anchor, code, email, flash, html, iurl, php, quote, size, table, url.

html seems to work though

Scratch that, html does not

BB Code does work with some limitations. As an example, DQSII used the following code in his signature:
Code: [Select]
[img]https://i.imgur.com/R7X3eWD.png[/img]
[img width=20 height=3]https://i.imgur.com/je5KHHH.png[/img]
(https://i.imgur.com/R7X3eWD.png) (https://i.imgur.com/je5KHHH.png)
Dirty Helga uses this code in her signature:
Code: [Select]
[b][color=pink]If you BREAK the [size=12pt]
[url=http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php/topic,6.0.html]RULES[/url]
[/size],[/color][color=yellow] I WILL SHOOT YOU![/color][/b]
If you BREAK the RULES (http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php/topic,6.0.html), I WILL SHOOT YOU!

I split the code snippets above so that they would have a decent appearance. You would want to do the code so that it is all in one long line rather than 2 or 3 lines. It all depends on the appearance you are looking for... As stated... You are welcome to use signatures as long as they are not distracting... Staff reserves the right to remove signatures which do not meet this guideline.

Now you know how to apply graphics, bold fonts, text size, color and urls... These features will allow you to do interesting things with your signature. This topic is being moved to forum support since it might help other member with their signatures....

SWEET!!! Now I can have my steam signature! Thank you good sir! I had to modify the code a little bit because URL tags aren't allowed, understandably. I hope it doesn't break the signature, though.

Code: [Select]
[url=http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198038123724/][img]http://steamsignature.com/profile/english/76561198038123724.png[/img][/url]

Crimson, is there a smaller choice than that one please?

Um......I'm not sure. I'll just pitch it.

IT has been a long time since I used one but I am 90% sure that Steam does have smaller stream signatures for use on forums.

The one I was using was from a different website. I didn't know that steam actually hosted their own forum signatures? I'd love to have known that.

I think Spatry was talking about this (https://steamsignature.com/)

I can't get any of them to work though, since a lot of bbcode tags aren't allowed in signatures

You may need to do some modifications to the bbcode to get it to work.

You may need to do some modifications to the bbcode to get it to work.

I could just directly insert the image, but then it looses a lot of it's function, like the ability to go to my profile, update my recently played games, and show if I'm online or not.

You could just put up a text link that says "CLICK HERE to see my Steam Profile and all of the games you should be playing on your Linux box!" LOL

As I said before, [url] tags aren't allowed in signatures according to that error message. I rememebr they were at one point because i had a signature with a link before on this website

Apparently you are not doing it right then because other people have urls in their signatures... did you look at my examples????

yes i did, I tried them and I still get that error message that I posted earlier.

I've been trying to enter in the url tag for the steam signatures and I'm also getting the not allowed error. I duplicated this using your example code...

Code: [Select]
[b][color=pink]If you BREAK the [size=12pt]
[url=http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php/topic,6.0.html]RULES[/url]
[/size],[/color][color=yellow] I WILL SHOOT YOU![/color][/b]

If my forum knowledge is still good, I think there might be a permission issue with standard user groups. I could be wrong, it's been a while.

<facepalm> now I have to dig through settings to try and find it.... is it really that important to have links in signatures we have them for just about everything else I believe.... including social networking...

Honestly? No it isn't. The signatures are obviously working like they should. Plus it's not like we have a ton of Steam users in the forum anyway. It's merely a convenience to click on the signature and go straight to the users official Steam page. It may be something to look into later if we get more popular with game nights.
Thinking more about it, there ARE a TON of really nice games for Linux on Steam, so if Linux gaming's a goal for your community forum, you may actually want to look into it. Either way, whatever you choose, thanks are in order for what you've done already.

Took the time to make my own signature, not as functional as the Steam signatures but looks nicer imo

I had to make some changes to the code that Steam Signature gave me in order for the forum software to recognize it. Kept throwing this random "[URL]" tag in there and ultimately not playing well with it.

Ultimately got it to work and link back to my Steam profile. Use below code as reference.
Code: [Select]
<a href="https://steamcommunity.com/id/mrnuminix/"><img src="https://steamsignature.com/status/default/76561198110731897.png"></a>

OHHH, so you used actual HTML code, smart! I'm going to have to try that...

EDIT: It works like a charm! Thanks for sharing that!

I'd like to take a moment and ask the mods and admins what defines an overbearing signature. I think it should also be posted on this thread since it's become quite popular and so that anyone reading this can easily view where the boundaries are. As far as I can tell, the only rules are...

Quote
Max characters: 300; characters remaining: XXX
Images in your signature must be no greater than 20x20 pixels

I had something that I thought had fit this criteria, but it seems to have been modified by a mod/admin. I had two modest sized images side by side which didn't alter reading space anymore than if there had been one image, and one very small icon/badge displaying my Linux distribution of choice, 20x20 pixels to be exact (About the same size as text). Keep in mind that I'm not trying to stir a pot by any means, I simply think that the boundaries should be clear in order to spare someone the effort in the future before spending a great deal of time into their signature.

An example might be only one image, XX wide x XX high, per user and XX amount of words at a max of XX font size.

At any rate, thank you very much for enabling this feature. It adds a touch of needed personalization and reminds me of the old days of gaming with a now dead clan. For me, it's starting to feel a little bit like home.

Images which take up two lines of text or LESS should be fine, the small steam banners are acceptable. The Bigger ones which show items in your game list are a distraction... I will be repairing signatures which do not meet this guideline, I still have a lot of catching up to do...

Lets just say that 50x500 pixels is the largest permitted. That is the same size as EricG's signature presently...

The 20x20 is hardcoded... I could not find where to change that but hey... if you split up your banners into a bunch of 20x20 pieces and stitch them together, that should be perfectly fine by me!

50x500 is acceptable... as long as they are not distracting... they should not contain goofy animations, links to pr0n sites and other nonsense which ignores forum guidelines... Now if you will excuse me, I have an appointment with my psychiatrist! I am not through driving him MAD! Ah ha ha ha ha ha!
