Title: Is there an updated way to install Dropbox to Manjaro 17.0.6?
Post by: ninjawarrior on November 22, 2017, 08:01:49 PM
I`m going to try to keep this short and simple. I have just installed Manjaro 17.0.6 Cinnamon and one of the prorams I wanted to install was Dropbox. I first looked on the Manjaro forums and even googled for any how-tos. There are allot of old fixes out there that just don`t work. So I thought I`d check this forum out and see if anyone might have a updated solution. the package is available in the AUR, but I think it`s outdated. I tried  sudo yaourt -S dropbox and sudo yaourt dropbox.

I think for starters though, Cinnamon has the caja file manager. And I couldn`t find a package for it. All though  I did try to use a tarball only to find out that the extracted package maight cause more damage than good. Now if I was running Linux Mint, The deb pakage would be a no brainer to install.

So I`m asking the community, is there an updated way to install Dropbox? I am kind of at my wits end here. Any usefull information would be much apreciated!! ;D

I'm not sure if theres an updated guide but by the looks of things you can get dropbox from the AUR, so to install that it would be

sudo pacman -S yaourt (skip this step if you already have yaourt)
yaourt -S dropbox

I did, as suggested, ti started a dialog of:

==> Edit PKGBUILD ? [Y/n] ("A" to abort)
==> ------------------------------------
==> y

What should i do?

Thanks!

Read closely what it is saying.
You don't want to edit anything so hit n
Then it will ask if you want to install. Y
Keep an eye on 'edit' & 'install'.
You then want to go to Package Manager / Preferences / AUR / Enable AUR support. Then 'check for updates from AUR.

NEVER use sudo with yaourt.

Just had a look with pacman. Seems you may want to check there first.

pacman -Ss dropbox
community/kde-servicemenus-dropbox 0.16.1-9
    Servicemenu for Dolphin which allows easy access to most of Dropbox features
community/perl-net-dropbox-api 1.9-5
    Net::Dropbox::API - Perl dropbox API interface
community/python-dropbox 8.7.1-1
    Python SDK for Dropbox Core APIs
community/python2-dropbox 8.7.1-1
    Python SDK for Dropbox Core APIs
community/rclone 1.41-1
    Sync files to and from Google Drive, S3, Swift, Cloudfiles, Dropbox and
    Google Cloud Storage

Don't know what's what as I don't use dropbox.

Installing packages from the AUR may seem a little confusing but with a little patience, you can get the job done.
Code: [Select]
yaourt -S dropboxEdit PKGBUILD ? [Y/n] ("A" to abort) I PRESSED "n" for no and pressed enter
Continue building dropbox ? [Y/n] press "y" and enter
It will download the tarball and build an installable package for you.
Be patient, it may take a minute or three to build the package...
When completed you will get a prompt which looks like this
Code: [Select]
[sudo] password for yournamehere:give your password and press enter
Continue installing dropbox ? [Y/n] press "y" and enter
It will tell you how much space it will use
Proceed with installation? [Y/n] press enter
you will see a message like this:
Code: [Select]
(1/1) installing dropbox                                                                [###################################################] 100%
Optional dependencies for dropbox
    ufw-extras: ufw rules for dropbox
    perl-file-mimeinfo: opening dropbox folder on some desktop environments [installed]
    xdg-utils: for "Launch Dropbox Website" and file manager integration [installed]
:: Running post-transaction hooks...
(1/3) Reloading system manager configuration...
(2/3) Arming ConditionNeedsUpdate...
(3/3) Updating the desktop file MIME type cache...
INstallation has succeeded. You will now find Dropbox in your menu.
