[Solved] Need Help with Remastersys
« on: October 30, 2014, 03:02:48 PM »
Trying to create a backup of my experimental system with Remastersys. I can successfully create the .iso but when I go to boot it, I get the error (initramfs)  failed to mount /dev/loop0 on //dev/sqaushsfs.
Any help appriciated

Remastersys is no longer supported as far as I believe. If I am not mistaken, Brian, it has been forked and is available under the name relinux. I tried to access their github page at the time of this response but I cannot get the page to come up.

Tony gave me link to a new repo and it has been updated for Ubuntu Trusty. I also tried systemback and got the same error.

Apparently on their website they moved to Launchpad.

maybe this post can help ?

http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/120198/how-to-fix-boot-into-initramfs-prompt-and-mount-cant-read-etc-fstab-no-su
remastersys has been known to have issues with "unknown" kernels , so a quick way to maybe solve this is to  update initramfs before you run remastersys

sudo update-initramfs -u

ps. here is an other link with some good trouble shooting on initramfs

https://ubuntugenius.wordpress.com/tag/update-initramfs/

to my knowledge remastersys is dead but updated by a 3 party group and indead availeble on launchpad.

i personaly like the manual approach kinde like in this guide.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization

with this exception that you manualy need to copy /home/useraccound to /etc/skel (including all hidden files) when you are finished with the modifications , replacing useraccound with the accound you have modified on your system. This action will ensure that all users get your customizations and settings and new users get them to

wenn you learn to do this manualy you are now longer depended on tools like relinux or remastersys.

Thanks for the information. I will try it out later....

UPDATE: I ran
Code: [Select]
sudo update-initramfs -u

and then ran Remastersys. I still get the same error
Code: [Select]
(initramfs) /init: line 3: can't open /dev/sdc: no medium found
/init: line 3: can't open /dev/sdd: no medium found
/init: line 3: can't open /dev/sde: no medium found
/init: line 3: can't open /dev/sdf: no medium found
/init: line 3: can't open /dev/sdf: no medium found
mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: Invalid argument
Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs

Any insights?

I'd honestly suggest doing it by hand or at least trying another tool. By hand is really the way to go though, because you will have the exact step that is causing the issue.  Also looking at your first post, I'm not sure if that's a typo from the tool, or just as you were transcribing the error, but if it's the tool your issue would be that you can't mount on //dev/squashsfs, since //dev isn't a directory.   Looking at your more recent post I think the tool is buggy.  I might be wrong (I've never done this before) but that's one more reason to at the very least try a different tool.

I think I solved it. I installed it by downloading the .debs and running dpkg. That didn't get all the dependencies, but it installed but didn't work quite right. I removed and re-installed by adding the repo and installing via apt-get. Now working.

Good to see its working.  Out of curiosity your first post said an experimental system, what all do you have on it?

It's my Ubuntu/Mint re-spin. I started with the Ubuntu mini/net install iso, added the Cinnamon DE from the nightly repo, Mint Update and some other Mint tools from the mainline Mint- Qiana repo.

Oh it's Frankenminbuntu right? That looks like it was a fun project, I love building distros from the ground up to get a perfect desktop suited for the person using it.

Yep. This started as Frankenminbuntu. I made it available for download through my Google share as Brian's Hybrid Ubuntu/Mint Remix- Cinnamon or BHUMR-C (Bummer-Cee) for short.
