Welcome, Guest.
I think Linux is a great thing in the big picture. It's a great hacker's tool and it has a lot of potential to become something more. -Jamie Zawinski

yeah, that's what i thought LOL

HON - Heros of Newerth. It's a MOBA-Game (like Dota or League of Legends) and in fact the first MOBA, that had a Linux version. It had been commercial first, but went free 2 play soon afterwards (because of League of Legends's success and the Dota 2 release)

I was very confused from the Launch of Steam Linux games. At the beginning nothing worked right. But in short time they fixed a lot of issues. I play Dota 2 a lot and I am happy to see that the Linux version is improving. At the last big Update they even fixed a long existing bug with a sound to being played, that I and lots of others reported right after the Launch. So at least we know Valve are serious about Linux since their own Consoles are using it.

But still there are many imperfections  and Graphical glitches to be sen in the Dota 2 Linux version. I am happy however that one of my best games can be run natively in Linux.

I agree, Valve does a lot of effort, bringin their own games to the Linux platform. Portal 1, Dota 2, Counterstrike / CounterStrike: Source, TF2, Left4Dead 2 already got ported. Portal 2 is still in beta (but works really well for me). Other developers follow (Sanctum 2 is in the process). Valve also stated, that Counterstrike: GO will follow soon and the new Cry Engine gets it's Linuxport as well. This week I read about the new UnrealEngine that will support Linux from release on. These changes are really cool and healthy for the linux community (:

Just installed Unvanquished and will give it a go soon, good to hear the above, although not sure about the unreal engine as i've tried the leaked benchmark demo and it does require some windows / microsoft VC stuff but unsure at this point what they're going to do with it.

if the Cry engine gets a Linux port then that also would be excellent. Hopefully the hardware venders will up their game in the driver department

(?)Fistful of Frags has been added to the Gamelist.

Unreal Tournament will be released soon and will:
  • be available for Linux
  • free of costs
  • opensource           <- I'm not 100% sure about that, but chances are quite high
  • look AMAZING
So definitely look forward to that (: You can find a link to the article i'm referring to You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login and a video by IG about this topic You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login.

I wonder, which improvements can be made in order to make the list easier to read and to pick games. Any ideas?

These are my top ten games, off the top of my head, some are new and graphically impressive, some are ancient but still really fun to play.  I know some of these are already mentioned, but I figured I'd vouch for them as well.

1. 0 A.D. - Great real time strategy game, somewhat similar to Civilization.
2. Battle For Wesnoth - Another great strategy game, with more of a JRPG Ogre Battle vibe.
3. Super Tux - Fun Tux platformer.
4. Super Tux Cart - Mario Kart clone featuring Tux, Konqi, the GNU, Beastie, etc.
5. Angry Drunken Dwarves - Fun puzzle game.
6. Megaglest - Another strategy game.
7. Freecraft (Edit- Renamed Stratagus) - Free WarCraft/StarCraft clone.
8. FreeCiv - Another Civilization type game.
9. Bos Wars - Another good strategy game.
10. FreeDroidRPG - A fun Diablo like RPG.

Here are even more free games  (142 to be exact) - You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

(?)0 A.D. has been added to the Gamelist.
( - )Battle for Wesnoth has already been in the Gamelist.
( - )SuperTuxCart has already been in the Gamelist.
(X)SuperTux has not been added (I try to keep up the quality level).
(?)Angry Drunken Dwarves has been added to the Gamelist. The reason for this is, that there isn't anything like this in the lsit yet and it looks quite retro.
(?)MegaGlest has been added to the Gamelist.
(X)Freecraft has not been added to the Gamelist.
( - )FreeCiv has already been in the Gamelist.
(X)BosWars has not been in the Gamelist.
( - )FreeDroidRPG has already been in the Gamelist.

I'll look into the games of your link. Thanks for sharing, mate (:

I played Neverwinter for a few weeks and it was really cool.
I also played Path of Exile for MONTHS on linux and it is pretty amazing. but i don't see a linux port for both games in the near future :(
Maybe we'll have luck with torchlight 3?

There is a Linux port for the original Neverwinter Nights. I do not believe the BIOWARE has the binaries any longer, so you will need to search online to see if you can find them elsewhere.
Windows assumes the user is an idiot... Linux DEMANDS Proof!

Well, Neverwinter Nights is available on gog.com (BTW: this a a MUST-VISIT site for all lovers of old games. sometimes they even gift people games. I got "torchlight 1" "dungeon kepper 1&2" and "Fallout 1 & 2 & Tactics" FOR FREE!!!). And since gog.com announced the support linux in the future, maybe NW: Nights will also be available.

( - ) Toribash is now available on Steam (Updated the entry)

Also: The Urban Terror Website is online again. Feel free to download and try it out (:

I added new TAGS for single- and Multiplayer games. However I'm not 100% sure if that is always right. I don't ask anyone to research what I should research, but if you know a game and you see that I added a wrong Tag then feel free to correct me (:
