I can relate. I don't usually see many people who use Arch on GNOME shell. Nothing wrong with the desktop, but see way more people using one of the light-weight desktops such as Openbox, Fluxbox or using either XFCE, and KDE.

I watched midfingr's video and gave manjaro-gnome-community-16.06-x86_64 a spin and ended up keeping it. It seems as quick as xfce on my pc, Pentium G3258, 8GB RAM, Geforce GT 730, uses around 600MB of memory.
Link to midfingr's video.

If you don't like it, remove it. No need for it anyway; just one more piece of overhead crap no sane Archer uses. And why the -Su?
And a a very large number of Archers run GNOME shell.
Regards

Gave up on Gnome, locks up and had to hard reboot, all my customizations were gone. -Su blame it on oldtimers syndrome. :)

Sorry to hear that happened. Never fun to lose everything you had set up. :(
