24/7 COL Gaming server
« on: March 19, 2016, 07:38:11 PM »
Hello everyone;

Spatry and I have been discussing with some members of the community on Mumble the future of COL Gaming and have decided to do two things:
  • Form a 24/7 gaming server where people can come and leave as they please
  • Reform the weekly gaming sessions
This thread pertains to the 24/7 server and which game(s) we would like to see hosted. The two biggest contenders right now are MineTest and Half Life.

If you wish to suggest a game, post it here and I will add it to the possibilities list. Hosting of these games will be done by myself on dedicated hardware with a dedicated Internet connection.

Post away!
Stay a while, and *nix!

Hmmm Half life? I never played that one... Maybe I will try it if it is on sale!

Good idea! I like it. hopefully, the ping isn't too bad for the european people in this community (I actually doubt, it will be ok for asians, australians and africans :/)

Either way, here is a list of Free-To-Play's I'd like to suggest (FOSS and non-FOSS):

Now a list with games, that need to be bought:
In the case of Garry's Mod, there are ENDLESS possibilities. This is a sandbox-game and there are literally thousands of custom game-modes for it (eg: Trouble in Terrorist-Town, etc... do a Google-Search for that).

That said, all of those could potentially work, but some may not be really suitable (for example a RTS game wouldn't really make sense, as you can not hop on and off during a match).
Shooters or Sandbox-games usually work best in that scenario.
So the following of the games I suggested would most likely work best:

Oh LOL. Yeah we're on Mumble now and discussed quite a few of the games that you posted. Factorio looks really interesting to me, but we're thinking that Terraria is our best bet because its a co-operative multiplayer game, that doesnt cost much, has linux support and some of us already have it.

From the discussion that we had on 3/19/16, Terraria, seems to be the most appealing choice.
It's like Minecraft, but 2D. The community with Terraria is large, but nowhere near the size of Minecraft.

As you can see from the steam page, the tacky look of minecraft is not present in this game. it's just sprites (as far as my knowledge goes). It has the ability to be social, we can build a big place to hang out, yet competitive with PVP.

I don't mind forking over $10 to play with you guys. I got a friend or two that own that game anyway. What do you guys think?

I think we're settled on Terreria? If some people can't afford or can't buy the game they can contact me and I will supply a copy. I've put a poll on this post just to see how many people are interested...

I think Terraria is an excellent choice for a constant Server, however it really is not my type of game. ;)

I thought it wasn't going to be my type of game either, and I used to play it a LONG time ago, but over the past few days of trying it out I've found that I actually really enjoy it.

I voted for the GRINCH! Why? BECAUSE IT WAS THERE! Muah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Say, Hasn't SUPER TUX KART got multiplayer yet? That might be fun if it does!

EDIT: Geeze according to THIS site, it is still being worked on.... I am not gonna hold my breath while waiting on that feature...
