Ubuntu Mate Edition Review
« on: October 24, 2014, 04:29:17 PM »
Hi all. I installed Ubuntu Mate and you can see what I think of it here
Bottom line, it's a good effort from Popey and company if a bit buggy. Not recommended for the novice user.

Yeah... I probably should have led with that.

I believe that the terminal transparency thing is actually a (poorly named) feature in MATE, as I believe I encountered it back in the MATE 1.2/1.4 days (I think that's 1.8).  IIRC there is a setting to make it transparent where you can see the window behind it, but I don't remember the name/how to get to it.

If you were concerned about the bugginess of the distro, I would suggest giving the LTS version a try. From what I gather, it's almost exactly the same thing other than its base. They actually released the 14.10 version BEFORE the 14.04 version, and enough people liked it that they were forced to release the LTS version. I haven't tried it yet myself, but I expect that it will be much closer to rock-solid than the 14.10 version. Just my two cents.  :P
