Title: [SOLVED] Resolving pacman-key update issues.
Post by: Druid on February 04, 2015, 04:40:59 PM
<From Spatry> It seems too many people are having problems updating Manjaro regardless of what flavor they are using. PLEASE READ THE SOLUTIONS provided in this thread BEFORE POSTING ABOUT PROBLEMS WITH THE GUI UPDATER. The GUI (Pamac) sometimes spits out authentication errors or problems with PGP keys. The information provided below will solve those problems when done correctly. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS update your system with:
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman-mirrors -gto update the mirrors and get faster download speeds - If you get an error use this command for pacman-mirrors instead
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman-mirrors --fasttrack
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman -Syyuwill force synchronization of lists and update the system. This command may need to be run twice.

I have installed mCOLe and started the upgrade process but after all downloads have been downloaded I get several errors:
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
error: jasper: signature from "Rob McCathie <korrode@gmail.com>" is unknown trust

Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
I obviously replied YES to have these packages deleted but im wondering why this is happening? Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong.
Thankyou

looks like the pgp keys are out of date / invalid

try the following in terminal:

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman-mirrors -gUpdates Mirrors
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman -SyyForces update of lists
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman -S gnupgsynchs and/or reinstalls gnupg
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman-key --populate archlinuxUpdates pacman keys
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman-key --populate manjaroUpdates pacman keys
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman-key --refresh-keysrefreshes pacman keys
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman -SyyuForce list update and synchronize packages on system. Ii the above does not work... REMOVE ALL KEYS as shown below and start over at the top of this list.
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo rm /etc/pacman.d/gnupgIf that does not work.... SHUT OFF pgp signature checking as a last resort: HERE (http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php/topic,2959.msg20113.html#msg20113)

Thanks for chiming in Synrgy... I always update with the following command and I never get errors... I will sticky this thread because it may help people who run into the problem
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman -Syyu

Yeah, I normally -Syyu but it can sometimes "miss" the keys for whatever reason, has happened to me a few times mostly after a fresh install though.

Awesome editing BTW, I didn't have time to explain everything while posting :D

(Also, there's no e in Synrgy ;) hehe)

I registered to thank you and to point an issue : you've written "sudo pacman-keys" when it's "pacman-key".

fixed, also that line should have been removed as it's useless (other than listing possible commands for pacman-key)

so will fix that too :)

I followed this Pin above to a tee - and I still cannot update due to a PGP key.

:: Proceed with installation? [Y/n] y
(540/540) checking keys in keyring                           [################################] 100%
downloading required keys...
:: Import PGP key 4096R/, "Antonio Rojas <arojas@us.es>", created: 2014-10-21? [Y/n] y
error: key "Antonio Rojas <arojas@us.es>" could not be imported
error: required key missing from keyring
error: failed to commit transaction (unexpected error)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

Like I said I went throught above sequence from Synrgy87 three times.
I would love to fix this - I am using the Cup of Linux - freshly downloaded - :-)

Welcome to the community, wewhitt :D <sigh> These PGP keys are starting to become a major annoyance. I updated the above post but figured I would also offer another suggestion as well. First, lets purge the existing keys:
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo rm /etc/pacman.d/gnupgThen repeat the steps mentioned HERE (http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php/topic,2959.msg17974.html#msg17974).

If ALL ELSE FAILS... Here is the DIRTY WAY to FORCE pacman to install your updates:

You can disable PGP signature checking completely. Edit /etc/pacman.conf as root and change PackageRequired to Never as shown:
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
[core]
SigLevel = Never
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

[extra]
SigLevel = Never
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

[community]
SigLevel = Never
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

[multilib]
SigLevel = Never
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
And Vice Versa to revert the change back after you successfully update... Save file then force package list synch and update with:
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman -SyyuI remember the old days (when running Arch) before pgp key signing became compulsory. Now it seems we have troubles since Manjaro staff is rapidly changing and new keys need to be acquired. Disabling pgp key signing should only be done as a LAST RESORT...

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS use
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman -Syyu to update Manjaro... DO NOT use Pamac (GUI) to update the system... Sometimes the GUI misbehaves... Use the terminal for updates... The terminal is your FRIEND!
Title: Re: [SOLVED] Resolving pacman-key update issues.
Post by: wewhitt on March 17, 2015, 11:29:14 PM
Thank you for your efforts - this worked. I was able to dump the keys and follow your instructions - updated with no issues. This may sound like a dumb question - I am very new to arch linux - the Pacman features and Yarout or whatever that is ... going through this procedure above - does this open up every PPA available. I know in Ubuntu I seemed to be adding PPA's a lot - this isn't the case in arch - am I right?
BTW - what made come to this distro was Spatry's YouTube channel and his how too's. I freakin love this distro so far - what an amazing breath of fresh air from all my other duel boot's. I can't tell you how I appreciate the efforts that went into this - to all involved ..... THANK YOU!!!!

There are no PPAs in Manjaro. You use pacman to install packages from the Manjaro repository. yaourt on the other hand will let you install packages from BOTH the main repositories and the AUR (Arch user repository). Always run pacman as ROOT... NEVER run yaourt as root.

The AUR is maintained by users and sometimes you may find some packages do not build properly. Yaourt is a pacman helper which reads PKGBUILD script, ensures you have the dependencies and compiles them for you on the fly.

A google search on "pacman arch" and "yaourt" will explain almost everything you would want to know. Yaourt accepts most of the command-line switches pacman does.

I have made an alias from some of the commands:

Quote
alias fixit="sudo rm -f /var/lib/pacman/db.lck && sudo pacman-mirrors -g && sudo pacman -Syyuu && sudo pacman -Suu"

Paste that to .bashrc and use fixit to execute.

I used Nano in the terminal window to edit pacman.conf and then updated with no problem.

gpg: keyserver refresh failed: No dirmngr
==> ERROR: A specified local key could not be updated from a keyserver.
[farevildee@manjaro ~]$
and guess what it wont let me update

basic (complete) approach to this problem in arch:

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
rm -R /etc/pacman.d/gnupg/
rm -R /root/.gnupg/
gpg --refresh-keys
pacman-key --init && pacman-key --populate archlinux
pacman-key --refresh-keys

In manjaro:

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
rm -R /etc/pacman.d/gnupg/
rm -R /root/.gnupg/
gpg --refresh-keys
pacman-key --init && pacman-key --populate archlinux manjaro
pacman-key --refresh-keys

Additional information:
For generating new keyrings and other steps in crypto programs you need system entropy.
Arch recommends to install the daemon haveged which generates this entropy.
(faster than just sitting around and waiting, doing random stuff)
Install from official repos with pacman, start and enable start on bootup with help of systemd:

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
systemctl start haveged
systemctl enable haveged

Let some time pass by and try again.

Personally I don't really like the approach with disabling signature checking, I feel like it follows the same logic as 'You have problems with your firewall? Disable it.'
Sure if you don't have a (security) feature you also can't have problems with it.

Hi, Just did a new install of Mcol 0.8.11.
Started updating via terminal, but I got a message asking to install signature from "Antonio Rojas".
No matter if I answered yes or no, it would not update. Tried all your solutions here, but they did not work.
However I found this in the Manjaro forum; sudo pacman -S archlinux-keyring
Once I issued that command update and upgrade went smoothly.. 8)

This was a pain, and it will surely keep people from installing Mcol...

Just to point that out again, since there is a lot of information in this thread: A reason why the approach which I described here:
You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
basic (complete) approach to this problem in arch:

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
rm -R /etc/pacman.d/gnupg/
rm -R /root/.gnupg/
gpg --refresh-keys
pacman-key --init && pacman-key --populate archlinux
pacman-key --refresh-keys
You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

In manjaro:

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
rm -R /etc/pacman.d/gnupg/
rm -R /root/.gnupg/
gpg --refresh-keys
pacman-key --init && pacman-key --populate archlinux manjaro
pacman-key --refresh-keys

sometimes doesn't seem to 'work' is this:
You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
Additional information:
For generating new keyrings and other steps in crypto programs you need system entropy.

The command

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
pacman-key --init
is the critical step.
When you initialize a pacman keyring your PGP Key is generated and this is the process which needs entropy.
You may have to actively create that entropy!
Give random input to your computer,also make your hard drive work by executing some find or list command like

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
ls -Rl /start a movie at the same time, click around, whatever and just let some time pass by.
Installing AND STARTING haveged as described above speeds things up.

I made a little re-collection of the commands necessary to fix this issue (still seems to cause problems). Basically, it's just what has been here before but in a more organized way ;)

FIX FOR PACMAN-ISSUES:
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman-mirrors -g     # This will update the mirrors
sudo pacman -Syy           # This will sync your local package-list
sudo pacman -S gnupg       # This will (re-)install your gpg-keys
sudo pacman-key --populate archlinux manjaro   # This will re-populate your Arch- & Manjaro-keys
sudo pacman-key --refresh-keys                 # This will refresh your pacman-keys
sudo pacman -S archlinux-keyring               # This will install the archlinux-keyring
sudo pacman -Syyu          # This will finally upgrade all your packages

If that doesn't work:
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo rm -R /etc/pacman.d/gnupg/
sudo rm -R /root/.gnupg/
sudo gpg --refresh-keys
sudo pacman-key --init && pacman-key --populate archlinux manjaro
sudo pacman-key --refresh-keys

Note, that re-populating Arch & Manjaro keys is necessary only on Manjaro.
If you are using Arch, please only import the archlinux-keys, NOT the manjaro-keys.

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
pacman-key --populate archlinux

Do you have a problem with the the pacman keyring while running pacman -Syu?
Because that's what this thread is about.
It may be my lack of English skills but I'm not sure if I understand correctly what sort of problem you have, but if you have trouble opening the GUI of some application from your desktop that has nothing to do with the topic of this thread.
If that's the case and I got that right please open a new thread in this section of the forum and copy+paste your text.
If I got that wrong and you have a problem with your keyring maybe try to phrase your issue differently and describe it a little bit more in detail.

You need the recursive flag to remove directories.
remove a file: rm <file>
remove a directory: rm -r <directory>

So you have to go with:

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo rm -r /etc/pacman.d/gnupg

Okay guys, stop it right here! I don't see anything offensive in Bendo's messages either, but I'm sure JayB is a bit worked up due to his issues. However, this is no reason to fight here. Stay calm and deal with your temper somewhere else... This is a friendly forum and we deal with infractions very strictly.

On that Note, @JayB (http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php?action=profile;u=3365) please RE-READ the Forum-Rules (http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php/topic,6.0.html) & Guidelines (http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php/topic,177.0.html). We don't want to exclude anyone from here, but we will if we have to.

Anyway, after that kind of bitter start here:
back to solving your issue...

As a software-GUI, mCOLe uses pamac (yes, that spelling is correct :P). If a program doesn't work correctly, you should always try to run it through the terminal and see for ourput-errors in there. This may help use solving the issue.
Pacman is a young packagemanager (not as mature as debian's "apt", for example). So while there are some major disadvantages, it sometimes still suffers  child-diseases. The Pamac- & Octopi- GUI's obviously are effected by that (and sometimes even cause issues on their own).

So, what you should do to help us solving the issue is typing following in your command line and giving us the output of your terminal:
Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
gksudo pamac

still don't see how pamac GUI issues should be discussed in a stickied pacman-keyring thread.

On Page 2, I gave an ENTIRE AND SORTED SOLUTION (http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php/topic,2959.msg21642.html#msg21642).
You gotta read all answers before posting your questions :P

Don't take it the wrong way - I know how confusing all this can be, when you are a beginner - but the solution IS written down here already. So it somewhat confuses me, that people cannot find it.
Any hint from you guys how we could point people into the right direction?

Peace, JayVii

Well I'd say because of that it's important to keep sticky-ed threads like that clean and not discuss anything else here.
There are like two sequences of commands which offer the solution but somehow the thread is 3 pages.
I think about deleting this discussion with JayB here, he had plenty of time to open a new thread on his topic like suggested and it doesn't contribute anything to this thread.
Also what's a little bit problematic here is that the solution can fail/need more time because of this entropy thing, it's also already described in the thread, but maybe it's still not that clear.
The creation of the PGP key can be not completed but without you seeing any error message.
That doesn't mean that the solution is wrong or you need another solution/command,just some more time and activity, installing and starting haveged should help - but again - it's all in this thread.

Same problem here. I'm trying to fix :(

Hm, to summarize the thread as short as possible, try that:

1.

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
pacman -Syu haveged
systemctl start haveged
systemctl enable haveged
2.
Let some time pass by, start a video or run a command like

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
ls -Rl /to make your hdd work.

3.
execute the following commands:

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
rm -R /etc/pacman.d/gnupg/
rm -R /root/.gnupg/
gpg --refresh-keys
pacman-key --init && pacman-key --populate archlinux manjaro
pacman-key --refresh-keys

4. try to run

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
pacman -Syyuagain.

Alternative some people have success with simly synchronizing the archlinux-keyring package.

Code: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
sudo pacman -S archlinux-keyring

This distribution is cool. But this needs to be fixed, right?

 Another thing, I like the Compiz effects, but it is very buggy, so I had to return to Xfwm4. The Kwin is good?

Rearis, be careful with that "FIX". it's only a temporary fix. running your packagemanager without any key-checking is a risky thing...

You should only use this measure if you need to do updates RIGHT NOW. or if you want to install something RIGHT NOW which cannot wait. So, yes. You should undo this ASAP.

In the longrun, though this will lower your security, so you should find a different solution. (eg: THIS (http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php/topic,2959.msg21642.html#msg21642) or THIS (http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php/topic,2959.msg21978.html#msg21978))

I got my problem temporarily fixed, because I have to do this again after two or three updates.
My gpg keys always go to oblivion once a week.

Three times now Spatry has bailed me out with this solution when someone, who shall remain nameless, has blown up his OS and had to reinstall. Thank you!
But I do wonder why Manjaro hasn't made this go away by now. . .

toddgrim, this issue should not be happening if people update their distributions once a week... I have not seen this issue surface in a long time... Welcome!

After running the pacman command to get the manjaro and arch keys, then refresh the mirrors, and finally the Syyuu my virtualbox install of Manjaro XFCE is creepingly slow.
During the Syyuu, after running for nearly five or more minutes, it just crashed and came back to nothing but a single blinking dash until I forced it to shutdown.  Starting back up, it went through the GRUB load screen, then as the five dots fill and rest while it loads, it cycled this seventeen times, and at five seconds each, that's 105 seconds, to just dump out to restart again.
After this restart, it took almost sixteen cycles or 90 seconds to finally load the login manager.  This screen no longer has fields for typing, I just did a best guess and got logged in.  Which just to get the background to display took nearly another minute.  And double-clicking anything takes a half a minute to open.
I re-ran the -Syyuu and it repeatedly told me there were files that were nothing but blank files and some other strange messages.  When it finished I tried once more, and it came back with nothing to update.  So, I restarted once more, and it took even longer than before to get to the desktop and let me attempt to run anything.
Double-clicking the Home folder on the desktop took more than a minute just to open, and another twenty to thirty before it went from a blank white box to showing my home folders and files.
Before I re-install, anyone have any ideas?  I cannot work on this with it in this state.

Are you aware that Virtualbox is having issues with distributions running kernel 4.2 and higher? I am guessing that could be your problem. Also if you waited too long between system updates you could end up with breakage.

For virtualbox performance, I only USE 1 CORE and 1 Gig of ram for XFCE. That is all that it should need. I have found that some OS's can act wonky when more than one core is selected. I am not sure why that is...

Post by: Suma on May 11, 2016, 04:55:05 PM
I have it set to one core, for the same reasons that you stated Spatry.  I do have it set to 2Gb of RAM, but that's what I typically run any VBox with.

As for the issues with 4.2 and higher issues, I did not know that, and until today; I've not had any issues either at home or at work.  I was just trying to get things to a point I could use shared folders because I have VB attached to the open internet where my work machine is on the highly constrained company internet.  I just needed to download FileZilla for a windows 7 machine and needed the open net connection.

However, I still cannot get the shared folders to work, so I'll probably set up a Win7 virtual for these needs for the moment and continue to play with Manjaro.  Besides, I needed an excuse to try out the lates mCOLe release.  :)

I have provided the solve for the shared folders issue here (http://www.cupoflinux.com/SBB/index.php/topic,4627.msg26838.html)... We do not change the topic of threads on this forum.
